FUNDRAISING THROUGH YOUTUBE – Surviving on a Penny for 30 days

Fundraising through Youtube – Surviving on a Penny for 30 days

Do you guys remember the ‘Surviving on 0.01 challenge for ‘I survived on $0.01 for 30 days” challenge by Ryan Trahan a few months ago? Well, the challenge was to cross America in 30 days on a penny to deliver a penny to Mr. Beast and was created in order to raise awareness and promote Feeding America.

Growing his channel by 2 million subscribers in a month, not only was Ryan able to become one of the fastest growing channels on Youtube, he was able to consistently retain the amount of viewers on his channel. So how did he do this?

A key factor to Ryan’s success was his focus on ‘RETENTION‘, being able to hold our customers or in this case viewers attention while drawing in new consumers through utilising thumbnails alone.

As you can see, Ryan placed great efforts on sensory appeal utilising lots of interesting action shots in his thumbnails to visually show the day’s challenge as well as colour appeals with blue and green thumbnails which has been proven to get higher click rates. Furthermore, His thumbnails also had short texts in them which informed viewers his progression meaning that viewers would be able to easily follow along even if they had not watched from the beginning.

So what does this all mean?

Ryan made smart use of the Bleier’s digital experience marketing and ensured his content allowed for an enjoyable ‘viewer’ experience through ensuring his thumbnails alone delivered entertainment, social presence, informativeness and sensory appeal in order which enabled his to grow his channel exponentially.

Ryan Trahan doubled views per month than Casey Neistat in his prime

Ryan Trahan’s video series is a really good example of experience marketing and how if utilised properly, it enables businesses or in this case a youtube channel to blow up. Through focusing on cognitive emotional, behavioural and sensorial offerings, he was able to exponentially grow his channel.

Many other techniques were used that enabled Ryan to successfully retain his audience such as through emotional appeals, collaborating with influencers, call to actions as well as posting at 10am EST everyday allowing people incorporate watching his videos into their routine.

As marketers, I think it would be great to really dive deep into these videos and study them further to see how else Ryan was able to retain and grow his channel so quick.

In doing so, we might be able to learn some new marketing tricks to help retain customers. What do you guys think!

  1. Great article! I think visual appeals in videos, especially on YouTube are so important. On the YouTube homepage, we are bombarded by so much content that it is crucial that content creators create something that will standout and lure in users. I think you did a great job at explaining this in your post with the example of Ryan Trahan!

  2. Interesting read! I find that thumbnails and titles are becoming more and more important in whether or not people decide to click on videos, and Ryan has definitely utilised them. I also think that social media helped him a lot, through word of mouth and generation of ‘hype’ on tiktok etc.
